Family member wants to buy me one so I'm not complaining. But the problem is that I don't quite know what to get. What would you choose? (nice pens or similar things are also a probability)

Also: a BUNCH of cool pictures of classic cars in the snow: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

I think a Monaco is a bit over the budget. How much for one?

I finally found a cheaper one, bulletproof with only 47k miles. I'm buying that for sure.

Bell and Ross are too large for me I think, and I don't think they have stores here. But I'll check on that, they have very nice chronographs.

Was it armored from the factory? Because I know that some A8's were optionally armored.

Monaco Calibre 6 (the basic one) lists for $3800, and can found easily for $2200-2500.

Don't pay retail - you can save money on ebay or similar. But yeah, try a few on. They didn't seem overly big to me when I tried one, but I don't wear a watch anymore. This, however, I might wear.

What do you want in a watch? Do you want a band (leather, rubber, or fabric) or a bracelet? Do you want a sports watch or a dressy watch? Do you want a wound movement (hand wound or automatic)? Answer those few questions and then it is easier to answer your question, or better yet give a few examples of what you would buy if you had more to spend.

I don't think I have much of a choice, the family member wants to buy it somewhere where they can divide the price in monthly payments (I don't think you have that in the U.S, couldn't for the life of me find the translation for that from portuguese)

2500 is a weird price point. Not enough to get you into a Speedy or a Sub or a Carrera, but quite a bit higher than anything "entry level" like a nice Hamilton or Tissot. Not sure what I'd go for at $2500, to be honest.

My, My. That's extremely pretty. I've got that same steering wheel in my A4, except without the tiptronic controls and I can assure you, It's one of the best steering wheels I've even used. It's sporty feeling, yet refined and has the perfect amount of little bolsters that give it a really nice appearance and feel. Plus it's pretty grippy.

All I'd do with that one is get some larger wheels, Those look like they're off a B5 S4 or something.

But do this now! NOW I SAY.

Always Automatic, leather or bracelet. I have my collection of Omegas, Breitings and TAG's, but finding a new nice watch for 2500 is quite harder than I thought.

Have you looked at Nomos Glashutte? In house movement, and it takes you in a different direction than just another oyster case sports watch. I like the Chronoswiss, too. You may find one used in your price range. Watchyouseek and Timezone forums supposedly are reliable market places.

2nd-hand/antique Rolex may be the way to go.

Also, Bell & Ross or U-Boat have some fashionable ones. Again, you're looking at "slightly used" instead of "insanely new and expensive." No idea if these Google links will work with Kinja.

Disregard watches, buy more car parts.

$2500? That's two zeros too many. I like watches, but that's just too much. You know what costs $2500 in my life? Full service on my R129 SL600. You know what else cost $2500? The new 5.7L HEMI I got for my Magnum.

You're spending that on a watch.

Think about that....

You might need to go for a more obscure brand, if you can't go used, at that price.

I've always liked both Ball Watches, known for their use of tritium tubes in lieu of lume, and Sinn Watches in that price range.

I've always loved the aesthetics of Christopher Ward's watches, but most are below your price range. Aesthetics are of course subjective, but here's one a little close to your figure: http://www.christopherward.com/men/aviation/c…

I'm not a big watch guy, but kind of a purist in general. Not fascist or anything, but for the same reason that I wouldn't buy a Porsche SUV, I wouldn't buy a watch from a pen manufacturer.

Kinja'd!!! NJAnon > My citroen won't start
01/04/2015 at 17:47

Kinja'd!!!0

You may need to increase that amount slightly past $2,500 if you're going for a watch to keep for a long time. And I 2nd that comment on trying on watches before buying them.

Nomos, Omega, Tag Heuer were mentioned. At least Omega (Swiss) & Nomos (German) have watches that stand the test of time and have in-house movements. I say you'll probably need to increase that amount because the timepieces ( Vacheron Constantin, A. Lange & Sohne, Audemars Piquet , Patek Philippe, Glashutte Original, Jaeger Lecoultre ) are the standard bar set in watchmaking. With that standard, pricing can range from $2800 up to $35,000. But you won't regret it. :P

I can understand paying more for something you want, but there's still a fine line for when things are a little ridiculously priced. I mean, sure, I have a $300 watch, but it was a gift. I really don't think I would want something any more expensive than that. I mean, if you've got $2500 lying around and nothing better to do with it, okay, but $2500 crosses the line I can agree with.

Kinja'd!!! My citroen won't start > JGrabowMSt
01/04/2015 at 19:38

Kinja'd!!!0

It's also not really my choice, a relative wants to buy me something significative and that will last (like a watch or a pen) and they gave me their budget. You also need to look in the greater scheme of things, a used submariner costs around 6k. 2500 isn't all that much.

True but in an age where all of us are checking our phones every 10 mins, having a separate device to tell time just seems silly. My parents bought me a nice watch for graduation. Too nice to wear except on special occasions. I literally wore it 5 times before it seemed too dated to wear ever again. It's probably worth $30 now on ebay.
